This is a kind of pianism that really tickles me.

Some Asian pianists have such command of technique, and of course sometimes it is a little too much. Or perhaps you can’t have too much technique, but you can have too much emphasis on it, I think you can say that much.

This, however, is the level I pretty often want to be on, but it is something that really costs you sweat to achieve, whether you do music or other things. You have the command, the control, but use it to play in the most fun sense of the word, to let everything loose. This guy has enough surplus of everything in this recording to give the music a tilt wherever he feels like it, to crack a joke when he wants to. Music at your whim…

And he turns it into a real musical story, a humorous one, of course.
